Claude Chenard interview on math dyslexia

U of M Researchers Investigate Math Dyslexia: MyFoxTWINCITIES.com

Claude Chenard of WHIZard Academy for Mathematics & English based in Eden Prairie, MN, was interviewed on Thursday 26 May 2011 by Fox 9 News reporter Bill Keller on a subject that is gaining national attention: dyscalculia or in layman's terms "math dyslexia".

WHIZard Academy provides individual math tutoring to many students from Kindergarten to College. As specialists in math tutoring the tutors at WHIZard Academy cater to the needs of many students with learning disabilities including dyscalculia, which is a severe math learning disability. It is estimated that 5% to 8% of students are afflicted with dyscalculia. Unlike dyslexia which has been researched extensively, dyscalculia is just getting to be understood by researchers and teaching professionals.

Students who suffer from dyscalculia have difficulty interpreting sets of numbers. They fail to grasp the relative size of a number and are unable to compare it to other numbers. Professor Varma at the University of Minnesota has stated that researchers have identified the neuro-cognitive disorder that inhibits the basic understanding of numerical and arithmetic concepts.

The math tutors at WHIZard Academy are familiar with some of the symptoms of dyscalculia. Students benefit from the one-on-one tutoring provided by WHIZard Academy by getting extra attention and the motivation to learn to the best of their abilities.

WHIZard Academy for Mathematics & English, based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota specializes in customized tutorial and enrichment programs for students from Kindergarten to College.
